Someone has written a book entitled I Hate Myself and Want to Die: The 52 Most Depressing Songs You've Ever Heard. There's a review of the book here.
The list of depressing songs includes "One" by Metallica and "Seasons in the Sun" by I don't know who. The #1 most depressing song? The Christmas Shoes. I feel so validated.

This is truly a subject I love. For my money, the most depressing lyric comes from Joy Division's Isolation:
Mother, I tried, please believe me
I'm doing the best that I can
I'm ashamed of the things I've been put through
I'm ashamed of the person I am.
I am also a Morrissey fan, and there are some good ones in his canon, too.
I would distinguish between depressing and well-written lyrics and depressing and poorly-written lyrics. I'd put the Mozzer and JD in the former category and pretty much anything loud played on the Point since the late nineties.
I would also be more likely to use the label "melancholy" rather than depressing for those lyrics. Because that makes them sound more worthwhile.
